Though the aroma of peppermint oil is pleasant to most humans, its strong, minty smell is disliked by many types of insects. This means peppermint oil can be used as a natural and non-toxic pest repellant around your home. Keep in mind that while this oil may keep pests away, it is unlikely to kill ants or act as a treatment for an infestation.
To use peppermint oil for ants, combine a few drops of the peppermint oil into a spray bottle filled with water and a bit of dish soap to help the blend emulsify. Shake well to mix and then spray the peppermint oil around the exterior foundation of your home and ant problem areas, such as pantries, kitchen cabinets, and around trash cans or appliances.
